Leicester City plunged further into their Premier League nightmare with a crushing 4-0 defeat to Brentford at the King Power Stadium. This fixture marked their sixth consecutive home match where they failed to find the back of the net, a situation that’s becoming all too familiar for the Foxes’ loyal fans. Brentford, on the other hand, capitalized on every defensive frailty Leicester displayed, leaving the home team’s manager, Ruud van Nistelrooy, to acknowledge it as a ‘huge step back’ for the team.
The game kicked off with early glimmers of hope for Leicester. Jamie Vardy, forever a symbol of their past glories, had some tantalizing opportunities, but as has been the theme lately, they went begging. Yoane Wissa set the tone for Brentford’s dominant play in the 17th minute, swiftly followed by a Bryan Mbeumo goal just ten minutes later. By the time Christian Nørgaard headed in a free-kick to make it three, Leicester fans had seen enough, with boos echoing through the stands and many opting to exit, knowing the game was beyond redemption.
Highlighting Leicester’s struggles were the crippling defensive lapses. Their goalkeeper, Mads Hermansen, had a day to forget with a disappointing 3/10 rating. The centre-backs Jannik Vestergaard and Daniel Amartey couldn’t form a cohesive defense, receiving mediocre ratings of 6 and 4, respectively. Even the wing-backs Thelo Agyepong and Luke Thomas joined in the defensive woes with performances that tipped into shambolic territory at ratings of 2 and 3.
The midfield and attack didn’t fare much better. Players like Boubakary Soumaré and Youri Tielemans struggled to thwart Brentford’s aggressive approach. The forwards, especially Kelechi Iheanacho, barely posed any threat to Brentford’s defense, further reinforcing the struggles Leicester is experiencing.
On the flip side, Brentford had players like Mikkel Damsgaard and Mbeumo positively shining with each offering masterful plays that Leicester’s defense just couldn’t handle. With Damsgaard not only controlling play but also assisting two of their goals, their winning streak extended to four away matches, a triumph that boosts them into 10th place in the standings.
Such outcomes cast a shadow over Leicester’s hopes of breaking into a more favorable position in the league standings, as they remain in 19th with a stark 17 points. They're now six points away from escaping the looming threat of relegation. Since their last celebrated home goal on December 8, 2023, the Foxes have been on a slippery slope downwards, and fans are growing increasingly concerned about the club's future in the league.
